About Claire’s painting, “Hold Me While I Freak The Fuck Out”:
There have been reasons aplenty to freak out in the past couple years, both personally and collectively. If you’ve been feeling it, too, you may identify with both horse and rider in this painting, as I do. My current series, Ama-Zone, is an exploration of feminine and equine myths, archetypes, and legends, as well as the special connection between horses and women.
While searching for image resources one day, I came across a photo of the famous race horse Point Given rearing up, taller than I’d ever seen any horse, in a full-blown FREAK OUT. The rider looked so small, just hanging on for dear life, but simultaneously giving Point Given a clearly much-needed hug. It really struck me. I put the rider into a vintage riding habit complete with veiled top hat on a side saddle, and painting was born.
